If you come from a traditional development background, the first thing you look for when joining a new platform is the IDE.
Eclipse. IntelliJ. Visual Studio. You know the drill.
In Pega, that question does not apply. And honestly, once you understand why, it changes how you think about the platform entirely.
Pega Does Not Have an IDE. It Has Studios.
Instead of installing a development environment on every developer’s machine, Pega works differently. Everything lives on a development server. The studios come out of the box when you get your Pega subscription. No installations. No version conflicts across the team. You just log in and work.
There are four studios worth knowing:
Dev Studio – this is where most developers spend their time. Configuration, rules, logic. Your primary workspace.
App Studio – previously called Pega Express. Think of it as the low-code layer. Business users can collaborate here. Developers can use it too. Pega strongly recommends starting here, especially for greenfield applications.
Admin Studio – background processing, API management, user sessions, administrative tasks. If you remember SMA from older Pega versions, Admin Studio replaced it completely from Pega 8 onwards.
Prediction Studio – decisioning and AI. Used for creating AI models and training datasets(not genAI ;))
The Mindset Shift That Matters
Here is something I always tell people new to Pega.
In traditional development, you write code from scratch. In Pega, you configure rule forms. Pega’s internal engine does the heavy lifting. What you bring to the table is logical reasoning knowing which step should call which action, how the flow should behave, where the decision point sits.
Programming skills matter. But in Pega, logical thinking matters more.
That is not a limitation. That is actually the power of the platform.
