    5 Reasons to Host Your Pega Applications on Pega Cloud

    Disclaimer: Do not solely use the reasons below to make a decision between Pega Cloud and Client Managed Cloud. This article is not meant for trade-off decision making – it is purely sharing my real-time experience. Before making your Pega deployment choice, take all considerations into account, including cost, which varies significantly based on your enterprise requirements.

    I have worked on both sides – applications hosted on Azure (client managed cloud) and applications running on Pega Cloud. And my experience on Pega Cloud has been largely positive, which is what this article is about.

    Let me give you the backstory first.

    At one of my previous clients, a large bank in the Netherlands, the applications were hosted on Azure. It was also one of the places where I learned a lot about Kubernetes, Docker, containerization, and cloud-native technologies. Those were valuable experiences and gave me exposure far beyond traditional Pega development.

    Later, I joined another organization where all major applications were already hosted on Pega Cloud. Interestingly, there was an active initiative underway to migrate those applications from Pega Cloud to Azure. The project had already been running for quite some time, with significant investments and effort put into it.

    Within a few weeks of joining, something unexpected happened. The decision was made to stop the migration entirely and continue with Pega Cloud.

    The migration project was scrapped, and the organization doubled down on the Pega Cloud strategy.

    The same bank I had worked with earlier running on Azure? By 2023 they had also moved their Pega applications to Pega Cloud.

    That tells you something.

    Why do so many customers eventually choose Pega Cloud?

    Based on my own experiences, here are a few reasons.

    Business Teams Get What They Actually Paid For

    When the bank decided to go client managed cloud, the IT lead brought in dedicated Kubernetes engineers, contractors, and Pega architects to plan the migration. No complaints technically – I was part of it and learned a lot.

    But from a business perspective, it raised an interesting question.

    Were we spending enough time building business capabilities?

    Or were we spending too much time managing infrastructure?

    Many highly skilled Pega professionals found themselves troubleshooting containers, checking logs, investigating platform issues, and dealing with infrastructure concerns instead of focusing on application delivery.

    Infrastructure management is important.

    But every hour spent managing infrastructure is an hour not spent delivering business value.

    That realization becomes more important as organizations scale.

    When you delegate infrastructure management to Pega Cloud, your Pega team actually builds things.

    You Cannot Easily Staff for Every Microservice Dependency

    Modern Pega deployments are no longer simple application servers running in isolation.

    Today’s cloud-native architecture consists of multiple services working together. You need clustering services, Search and Reporting, Constellation services, Kafka, Cassandra, and more. Each of these is a specialised area.

    You might have a DBA. Maybe a Kafka specialist. A solid DevOps engineer can cover a lot. But when something goes wrong with Cassandra at 2am, you want the right person on the call.

    I experienced this firsthand during a Cassandra-related initiative. Instead of trying to figure everything out internally, we were able to bring Pega Cloud specialists into discussions, clarify requirements, agree on execution plans, and allow the platform experts to take ownership of the changes.

    That level of access to specialized expertise can remove a significant burden from internal teams.

    Instead of becoming experts in every supporting technology, organizations can focus more on their business applications while relying on specialists when needed.

    (Fair remark – A Big organization with big purse can pull this off themselves)

    The maintenance burden shifts away from the application teams

    This is probably one of the biggest advantages from a Pega architect’s perspective.

    Many experienced Pega professionals will remember weekend upgrade activities.

    Logging into servers. Running upgrade scripts. Monitoring logs.

    When strategic applications are involved, upgrades can become stressful events requiring significant planning and coordination.

    Upgrades were a real effort.

    My first Pega upgrade on Pega Cloud was a completely different experience.

    The responsibility shifted. The Pega Cloud team handled the execution. Our job was planning and preparing the product teams. They ran the scripts overnight in lower environments, completed the upgrade in higher environments, and we verified and confirmed.

    The process became much smoother.

    The same applies to patches, security updates, hotfix installations, infrastructure maintenance, and platform-level activities.

    Rather than continuously debating ownership between application teams and infrastructure teams, there is much clearer accountability.

    For organizations running critical customer-facing applications, this can significantly reduce operational overhead.

    The support model extends beyond traditional support tickets

    Another aspect I appreciated was the operational support model.

    The Pega support portal gives Pega Cloud customers access to cloud specialist roles for infrastructure-related tickets – cloud maintenance and cloud change requests.

    Of course, support models vary depending on contracts and service levels.

    From my experience, we had standard support with tickets classified by severity and SLA. But we also had direct access to specific Pega Cloud engineers we had built a relationship with over time. When something needed escalating, that mattered.

    What I genuinely valued from a CoE perspective was the proactive incident monitoring.

    There were occasions where performance issues or recurring connector failures triggered proactive incident notifications before business teams even raised concerns.

    Having specialists continuously monitoring platform health provides an additional layer of confidence, especially for business-critical applications.

    Additional environments and supporting services

    There are also practical benefits that customers often appreciate.

    As a Pega Cloud customer you get the Pega Deployment Manager instance included, upgraded to the latest version.

    During upgrades you get clone environments.

    During POCs you can request a clone environment – and in my experience, this was not difficult to arrange.

    CDH customers get a free Business Operations environment.

    And there is a dedicated Pega Lab environment on the latest version for POC work.

    Exact offerings obviously depend on licensing and commercial agreements, but the flexibility around temporary environments and supporting services was something I found particularly useful.

    It allowed teams to validate ideas and perform testing activities without introducing unnecessary complexity into the primary environments.

    Final thoughts

    Having worked with both client-managed cloud environments and Pega Cloud, I can see advantages on both sides.

    Client-managed environments provide greater control and can be a fantastic learning experience for teams interested in infrastructure, DevOps, and cloud engineering.

    But when I look purely through the lens of business outcomes, operational simplicity, maintenance ownership, and access to platform expertise, I can understand why many organizations ultimately choose Pega Cloud.

    At the end of the day, most businesses invest in Pega to solve business problems.

    The less time they spend managing infrastructure and the more time they spend delivering value, the better the outcome tends to be.

    And perhaps that is the biggest reason why Pega Cloud continues to be the preferred choice for many customers today.

    Build applications. Let Pega manage the infrastructure.
